DIY Pom Pom Sandals
Summer trend alert! Pom pom sandals. They are a hot trend this summer, and I’m loving all the pom pom sandals I’ve been eyeing. So much color, and they remind me of a fiesta on the beach. Since it is a trend, I thought why not DIY pom pom sandals to get the same look at a fraction of the cost. These DIY pom pom sandals costed me about $30. Much cheaper than $190 sandals I’ve been loving over and inspired by to make these DIY pom pom sandals.
Here’s your supply list:
pom pom trim (1 yard)
ribbon trim (about the width of sandal toe strap)
scissors
I had most of these supplies on hand, so if you don’t have any of these supplies your cost will be a little more than what I spent. The ribbon trim I got in the $2 bin at a fabric store. And the Pom pom trim I also picked up at the fabric store, but linked a similar one above.
This DIY pom pom sandal tutorial is a two-step process. The first step is gluing on the ribbon fabric and the second step is assembling the pom poms.
Cut the ribbon the length of the toe strap. Add glue on the ribbon trim, and firmly press down on the leather toe strap. Make sure to add glue on the cut trim ends so it doesn’t unravel over time. Cover each leather strap with a ribbon. Alternate between complementing ribbon styles. Let it dry for about 24 hours before wearing. While it is drying add your pom poms!
Take your pom pom trim. There is a loop that secures the pom pom to the trim. Using the jewelry pliers, open a jump ring and feed your jump ring through the loop on the pom pom. Then cut the string that is securing the pom pom to the trim so the pom pom is released. Repeat for each pom pom. Then take a pom pom with an open jump ring and slip it over the gladiator lace. Using the jewelry pliers, close the jump ring so the pom pom is secured on the lace. Alternate between pom pom colors and work your way up the gladiator lace. I used the entire yard of pom poms for one pair of sandals, securing them with jump rings on the gladiator sandals.
At the end of the lace, I added a tassel for variation. Here’s a DIY of making a tassel OR you can buy one. Add other variations like charms, beads or glue smaller pom pom trim on the leather strap. OR buy gladiator sandals that lace up mid-thigh for more of a dramatic look.
